MfP climb - Mt. Elbrus, Caucasus, Russia

Targu-Mures, Romania

September 3, 2006

Violence is not acceptable!

- A message for peace from Elbrus Peak, 5642 m –

A team of eight climbers from Targu-Mures, Romania, has climbed on the 16th of August 2006 Elbrus Peak (5642 meters) from the Caucasus Mountains, the highest peak on the European continent. The climb took place during the expedition called "We climb together - Targu-Mures at heights!", organized between August 9 and 22 in the Caucasus Mountains , Russia . The project aimed at promoting and celebrating positive models of interethnic living together and developing the communities from the Mures County. The team consisted of representatives of Romanian and Hungarian communities and enlisted their project within the international initiative "Mountaineering for Peace" - a network of climbers and people who practice different sports in the mountains, promoting values and principles that are commonly shared by peace work and climbing activities. The team members took a photo with a peace message in the base camp and did their best to respect the environment, local communities and the other teams on the mountain. One of the team members, Lucian Stoica, skied down from the summit and Szutor sigmond used his paraglide to descend from 5100 meters high. The other team embers were Szekeres Gero, Kovacs Robert, Uwe Pop, Graur Gabor, Begidzsan Laslo and Sabin Muresan.

Sabin Muresan says:

'Any form of violence can be lethal during the climbs, especially in high mountains. If one doesn't pay respect to certain ground rules in the interaction with the mountain, the environment and the team mates, not paying respect to one’s own body – this can lead to death. Therefore we cherish life, freedom, the team spirit, human dignity, adventure, truth, solidarity, peace. We value everything which brings us satisfaction and full harmony. Those who have ever climbed a peak, no matter how high this was, have felt at least for one moment the state of peace and inner calmness that it is being offered up there.

Learning from our positive experiences in the mountains we wish to work for peace and to multiply them in our communities, which are facing now so much violence. We dedicate our climb on
Elbrus Peak to all the victims of every-day violence and to all of those who are causing, with or without their intention, pain and suffering to other human beings. We raise our eyes with hope towards the future so that tragedies such those in Iraq, Congo, Rwanda, Colombia, Israel, Palestine, Bosnia, Armenia, Cambodia, Chechnya and many other places - shall not happen again; we are expressing our support to all those who are practicing empathy, nonviolence and are engaging creatively in conflicts - all those who live the joy of life, work for a peaceful and sustainable development of their communities and work for a world in which violence and war have no place. Violence is not acceptable!’

Because in the community of mountaineers there are many people with whom we share the same values, we encourage all those who practice skiing, snow-boarding, paragliding, rock or ice climbing, mountaineering at high altitudes - and any other sport in the mountains - to dedicate their performances and climbs as well as their positive energy to a conflict they wish to see transformed through peaceful means, to a community which they want to see peaceful, bringing their contribution to the building of a culture of peace. Make your voices be heard as clear as possible and use in a conscious way the passion for mountains and sport to support communities and people who suffer from violence.

Your messages can be centralized by the ‘Mountaineering for Peace’ network, which aims to support all such initiatives.
